I've signed off on industrial equipment and MRO purchases for a 65-person protein processing plant for six years. Short answer: it depends on your hazardous area classification, not on your pump supplier. In fish processing, the ATEX question isn't exotic. Many facilities rely on ammonia refrigeration, and ammonia valve groups, compressor rooms, or enclosed process areas can create potentially explosive atmospheres. Equipment that runs in those spaces needs to be certified.
Twin screw pumps are common in fish processing because they move viscous, shear-sensitive material like fish paste, surimi, and offal without introducing air or breaking down the product. An Alfa Laval twin screw pump with ATEX certification is designed so it won't become an ignition source in normal operation or reasonably foreseeable fault conditions.
Still, if your safety officer confirms the pump will sit outside a classified zone, you don't need the ATEX version. That's a legitimate cost saving. Treating ATEX certification as an add-on rather than a compliance requirement is where plants get into trouble. In 2023, I watched a plant get cited for running non-certified equipment in an ammonia compressor room. The replacement, downtime, and inspection fees cost several times the price difference of the ATEX pump upfront.
How can I verify an Alfa Laval distributor is actually authorized?
From the outside, every website with Alfa Laval photos looks like an authorized dealer. The reality is that some sellers import equipment through gray-market channels, and the factory warranty doesn't survive that trip.
For a heat exchanger or pump, the warranty and spare parts chain matters more than the discount. An authorized Alfa Laval distributor can supply OEM gaskets and plates, trace serial numbers, and process a factory warranty claim. A non-authorized reseller usually can't.
Three checks I run on anyone new to our approved vendor list:
- Ask them to put in writing that they are an authorized Alfa Laval distributor. Then verify through the official Alfa Laval contact or distributor directory.
- Ask who handles warranty claims: the distributor directly, or Alfa Laval? If the answer is vague, that's a red flag.

It depends on what heating system you're replacing and what your utility rates look like. Here's a real example from our plant, not a manufacturer's brochure.
We compared a high-efficiency AC unit against a cold-climate heat pump for a 900-square-foot annex next to the production floor. Installed cost: $9,800 for AC; $12,300 for heat pump. The extra $2,500 was hard to swallow until we looked at the annex's existing heat source: electric resistance baseboards. The heat pump does both cooling and heating. In the first full year, it cut heating cost by roughly $1,100 compared with resistance heat. Payback came in around three years, and the unit should outlast that.
The belief that heat pumps don't work in cold climates comes from an era before inverter compressors and modern refrigerants. That assumption is due for an update. If you only need cooling and already have cheap natural gas heat, a straight AC unit might still win on total cost. I reviewed five quotes for a 2,000 MBH steam boiler in 2024, and the total cost varied from about $31,000 to $47,000 for similar equipment. The lower quote wasn't unreasonable, but it left out the scope that tends to get forgotten until startup. Always ask for these specifically:
- combustion air louvers and flue stack modifications
- feedwater tank, condensate return, and water treatment

- permits and pressure vessel inspections
- OEM commissioning and operator training

Comparing boiler installation quotes means comparing the written scope line by line, not the first page price. The vendor who clearly lists exclusions is easier to work with than the vendor who hides them.

Individual fan purchases are small enough to slip under approval limits, which is exactly why they're interesting. A pattern of small buys usually means someone is solving an engineering problem with pocket change. Before you buy or ban, walk to the location and measure the temperature. Sometimes a $99 fan is a legitimate fix. The problem is when unplanned micro-purchases become the ventilation strategy.
When should I repair an Alfa Laval plate heat exchanger instead of replacing it?
Plate heat exchangers are worth repairing because you can replace individual plates and gaskets. A shell-and-tube unit doesn't give you that option. The first number I use is the damage ratio. If less than 20-30% of the plates are damaged and the frame is still square, repair is often the right call. If more than half the plate pack is worn or corroded, you're not repairing—you're rebuilding.
Next, compare repair cost to replacement cost. We repaired an Alfa Laval unit in 2022 by replacing 18 of 80 plates with new gaskets, re-torquing the frame, and pressure testing it. That work came to about 25% of a new unit and gave us eight more years of service. Good math.
One thing that changed in the last decade: plate designs have improved significantly, and 3D-printed heat exchanger components are now in production rather than in press releases. Newer units can deliver better heat transfer at a lower pressure drop. If your existing unit was designed in 2010, repairing it may still be cheaper upfront, but the energy penalty of the old design can tip the calculation. Run the numbers both ways. The fundamentals haven't changed; the performance gap between old and new has.
