Stop Making the Same Air Filtration Mistakes I Did
If you manage an industrial facility—whether it's a food processing plant, a chemical lab, or a machine shop—you've probably faced the same confusion I had five years ago. Should you buy K&N air filters for the compressors? Are 20x25x1 standard HVAC filters enough for the entire warehouse? 20x25x1 HVAC Filters
These standard-sized pleated filters (20x25x1 inch) are everywhere—home and light commercial HVAC. The efficiency depends on the MERV rating. A MERV 8 catches 85% of particles 3–10 microns; MERV 13 catches 95% of submicron particles. For a factory floor, a MERV 11–13 is usually enough to keep dust out of the ductwork and protect the coils. The catch? You need a filter rack that fits 1-inch depth—many industrial units use 2- or 4-inch pleated filters for lower pressure drop.
Air Purifiers (HEPA)
Portable air purifiers with HEPA filters are designed for sealed rooms. They can capture 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles. Great for a cleanroom or a control room. But stick one in a large open workshop? The airflow is too low to make a dent. I once ordered 10 units for our assembly area—total waste. The room volume was 20,000 cubic feet; each unit moved only 200 CFM. It would take 100 cycles to clean the air once.
Dehumidifiers
Dehumidifiers are not primarily air filters. They remove moisture, and some have a basic filter to protect the coils. The little mesh filter catches only large lint and hair—think 30–50 microns. But in a heavy dust environment, you need to clean every 2–3 months. The labor time to remove, clean, dry, re-oil, and reinstall is about 45 minutes per filter. We have 8 compressor intakes. 20x25x1 Filters
Standard 20x25x1 MERV 8 filters cost $2–$5 each in bulk. Replace every 3 months. 8 filters per change = $32. Yearly cost $128. Labor: 10 minutes to swap 8 filters. For three years: $384 + 6 hours labor ≈ $600. A no-brainer for general ventilation.
Air Purifiers
HEPA filter replacements for a mid-range unit cost $40–$80 per filter, replaced every 6–12 months depending on usage. Pre-filters need changing more often. If you have 10 units, that's $400–$800 annually in filters. Labor adds up. Much more expensive per CFM cleaned than a central HVAC filter.
Dehumidifiers
Dehumidifiers themselves consume electricity (500–1000W). The basic filters are washable and last years. However, the compressor and fan can fail. Average lifespan in continuous industrial use: 2–3 years. A $300 unit every 2.5 years plus energy cost $150/year = $675 over 3 years. Not a great filtration value.
My rule of thumb: for general air cleaning, 20x25x1 filters provide the best cost per cubic foot. K&N makes sense only for specific engine intakes where washability is critical. Air purifiers and dehumidifiers are niche solutions.
Dimension 3: Application Scenarios
K&N Filters
Best for: Air intakes of engines, compressors, and generators in moderate dust environments. Do not use if fine dust (below 5 microns) is present, or if the equipment is sensitive to oil contamination (the filter oil can migrate downstream).
20x25x1 Filters
Best for: HVAC systems in factories, warehouses, offices. Can be upgraded to MERV 13 for better particulate control. Not suitable for high-humidity environments unless the filter media is treated (paper can degrade). Also, 1-inch depth has higher pressure drop than deeper filters—check your fan static pressure.
Air Purifiers
Best for: Enclosed rooms with high cleanliness requirements (lab, control room, cleanroom). Useless in open spaces. Also, they generate noise and take up floor space.
Dehumidifiers
Best for: Basements, storage areas, cold rooms where condensation is a problem. They lower humidity, which indirectly reduces mold and dust mite growth. But they don't remove airborne particles effectively. Pair with a separate filter.

Here's where many engineers overlook the connection. Poor air quality can directly damage fluid management systems—the pumps, heat exchangers, and separators that brands like Alfa Laval manufacture. - For equipment intakes (compressors, engines): Use a K&N type only if you're in a clean environment and need washability. Otherwise, use a Donaldson or similar disposable panel filter with a higher efficiency rating.
- For general workshop ventilation: Install 20x25x1 or 2-inch pleated filters in your HVAC unit, rated MERV 11–13. Change them every 3 months. Buy in bulk from an industrial supplier—not the hardware store marked up 3x.
- For a cleanroom or sensitive area: Deploy a HEPA air purifier with a pre-filter. Use it only in a sealed space.
- For humidity control: Add a dehumidifier (or better, a desiccant system) but accept that it does not equal air purification.
- Integration with fluid management: When you source pumps, heat exchangers, or separators from an established manufacturer like Alfa Laval, ask your authorized distributor about required ambient air quality. They may provide guidelines that save you from the same mistake I made.
Remember: no single filter solves everything. The cheapest option (20x25x1) is surprisingly good for many industrial tasks. Don't over-purchase air purifiers you don't need. And never assume a dehumidifier cleans the air—it doesn't.
